Greece: discovering the charms of Nafplio

Nafplio, a gem nestled on the east coast of the Peloponnese, captivates many visitors with its rich history, picturesque alleys, and vibrant old town. Once the first capital of present Greece from 1823 to 1834, this romantic city, decorated with flowers, boasts ingenious fortifications, neoclassical buildings, and many charming shops, cafes, bars, and restaurants.

The highlight of Nafplio is the Palamidi Castle, situated 220 meters high on the Palamidi Hill. The castle, built by the Venetians in 1687, offers panoramic views of the city. Adventurous souls can ascend its 900 steps, while others can opt for a scenic drive. The castle served among others as a Turkish prison!

From the bustling center with its five squares – Syntagma, Trion Navarchon, Filellinon, Agios Spyridon, and Kapodistrias – to the new district with modern Greek-style restaurants, Nafplio’s charm is irresistible. Stroll along the marbled streets, showing the Venetian influence, and enjoy the old-world atmosphere.

Bourtzi, a small island with a well-preserved fortress, beckons from the harbor. Accessible by tourist boats, the island showcases the strength and beauty of the Bourtzi fortress, built in 1471. The Venetians fortified the island in 1473, leaving a lasting architectural legacy.

For a delightful beach experience after exploring the city’s cultural sites, head to Arvanitia beach, located beneath the Palamidi Castle. Those seeking a larger sandy expanse can visit Karathona beach a few kilometers south of Nafplio.

History buffs shouldn’t miss Akronafplia Castle, the oldest in Nafplio. Originally constructed by the Romans and Byzantines, the castle was later enhanced by the Venetians and Turks. The Archeological Museum on Syntagma Square is another must-visit, housed in a beautifully renovated Venetian mansion from 1715, showcasing artifacts from the Argolida region.

Tyrins, an archaeological site just outside Nafplio, unveils ancient ruins dating back to 5000 BC, including walls built by the mythical Cyclops. The site, declared a UNESCO World Heritage site, has undergone extensive restoration, welcoming visitors since 1999.

In the heart of the old town, the Agios Spyridon Church, built in 1702, presents a solemn interior adorned with Byzantine icons and a unique floor featuring the Star of David, an unusual sight in Orthodox churches.

Nafplio, a city where great history intertwines with attractive shopping and eating, guarantees an unforgettable experience for everyone.
