The ingredients of this easy cycling holiday are: pretty villages, attractive provincial towns and beautiful nature! The history of the former inland sea ‘Zuiderzee’ and lively Hanseatic cities like Kampen,  are never far away here. Rustic cycle lanes cross unique lakes such as the Beulakerwijde and follow the river Zwarte Water. Along the way in Giethoorn, ‘Venice of the North’ you may take a nice canoe trip or explore this Venice of the North by boat or by foot.

Your base, fully equipped, is a hospitable hotel in Zwartsluis. From this ‘home’ you can cycle to all the beauties that this region has to offer!

Day 1. Arrival in Zwartsluis at Hotel Zwartewater.

After your check-in you will receive your roadbook and tour information at the reception. In the evening you may have dinner in the hotel (reserve beforehand) or in a local restaurant.

Day 2. Bike tour appr. 50 km

You will first cycle to the pleasant town of Meppel, where you can walk around and do some shopping. Via Wanneperveen you will cycle through the watery landscape of Overijssel to the world famous town of Giethoorn. Enjoy this Venice of the North and take a nice boat trip through this beautiful village. Your bike ride returns to your relaxed hotel in Zwartsluis via the characteristic lakes of Belter Wijde and Belt Schutsloot.

Day 3: Bike tour appr. 60 km

After breakfast your trip leads along the river Zwarte Water to the beautifully situated town of Vollenhove. Take your time for a walk or sit down at the port. Via Blokzijl, an idyllic town, you continue cycling through nature reserve the Weerribben. You pass villages with names such as Kalenberg, Wetering and the hamlet of Muggenbeet (only 25 permanent residents!). The last stop is the village of St. Jansklooster. Here you may climb the striking water tower (45m high) for a stunning view over the Wieden, a vast peatland. Cycling straight on between the lakes Beulakerwijde and Belterwijde, you will return in Zwartsluis.

Day 4: Bike tour appr. 55 km

Your first stop today will be the Hanseatic town of Hasselt. It has more than 70 national monuments and has been a protected cityscape since 1982. Along the north side of the river IJssel you reach the attractive Hanseatic city of Kampen. You will see beautiful historic buildings and may visit the municipal museum. Feel free to immerse yourself in this lively city center with special and varied shops. Your way back to Zwartsluis goes on top of a dike, the Kamperzeedijk, and will pass places like IJsselmuiden, Grafhorst and Genemuiden.

Day 5: Departure.

After breakfast you’ll check out of hotel Zwartewater.
